What is a Favicon?
A Favicon, also known as a website icon, is a small 16×16 pixel image that appears in the browser address bar when your blog or site is loaded. As an example, look at the red icon with the number 1 in it that OneNightSite.com uses. It helps your blog stand out a little.
Favicons in a Tabbed Browser
One of the best things about a favicon is that it appears in the browser tabs in multi-tab browsers like Firefox. This helps you to recognize the tab containing your site – increasing usability.
How to Add a Favicon to your Blog
There are good how-to sites that already exist, showing you how to create a favicon, so instead of re-inventing the wheel, I’ll point you to the one we used when designing One Night Site. Photoshop Support has a clear and simple example of how to create a Favicon.
Where to Upload Your Favicon
For a Wordpress blog, you need to upload your favicon.ico file to the root folder of the Wordpress installation. This is typically in the following location:
/public_html/wp-content/themes/YourThemeName
or
/www/wp-content/themes/YourThemeName
