Step 9 – Create Site Architecture

Step 9 will take you about 15 minutes to complete. This is where we define how your blog's content is categorized.

Wordpress is all about Pages, Categories & Posts

When building a Wordpress blog, there are 3 levels of information that you need to create when deciding what content will go on your site.

Pages

Pages in Wordpress are typically used for content that is of a global nature. By that we mean it's accessible from anywhere on the blog/site. This will often include such pages as About Us and Contact Us etc. This content isn't time specific (i.e. doesn't have a date stamp to indicate when it was published) as it's normally created when the site is created.

Posts & Categories

Posts are the entries in your blog and are usually shorter pieces of content that you write anything from several times per day for a really busy blog, down to around once per week (or whenever you get a chance). When you publish a post, you organize it by placing it in one or more categories. This allows you to break the content down into related posts. An example would be on a blog that reviews Books, Music, DVDs and Games. These would be your categories, and a Harry Potter review would be posted in the Book category.

One Night Site as an Example

If you look at OneNightSite.com as an example, each of the 14 Steps, the FAQs and the About page were created as pages, whereas the Blog section has categories and posts in it and is much more like a traditional diary (time based) blog system.

In the rest of Step 9, we'll show you what you need to do to set up your foundation architecture.
