Step 7 – Install Wordpress Theme

Step 7 is one of the most exciting steps as you get to see a real design on your blog. It will take you about 5 minutes to complete.

Upload Your New Wordpress Theme via FTP

When you downloaded your theme it probably came with some instructions in a README.txt file. If so, you should open it to see if there are any specific things you need to do. Generally, you need to upload the folder containing the theme (it will be named after the theme) to the /themes/ folder on your hosting web server.

What is FTP?

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. Essentially, it's a method of moving your files from your computer to the web server with your hosting provider (from Step 1). You'll be using it quite a bit from now on to upload files to your blog.

Download FTP Software

To transfer files, you need FTP software. We recommend Filezilla as it's a free open-source FTP program and is easy to use.

How to use FTP

Once you have installed your FTP software (like Filezilla), you need to set it up to point to your website. The screenshot below shows what it looks like to add a new site to Filezilla. Again, using our Top10PhotoThemes.com example site.

You can find the information you need in the initial Welcome Account Info email from your hosting company. The info. you need is:

  1. Host (this will be your domain name or another address your email contains - perhaps ftp.something.com)
  2. Logontype - set to normal
  3. User
  4. Password

Once you have successfully gained access via FTP you can continue with this step.
