What Are Social Networking Sites?

In today's Web 2.0 economy they are the traffickers of the new technology currencies; traffic, fans, followers and brand exposure.

How can Social Networking help me to grow my business?

There are 3 key strategies involved in Internet Marketing when it comes to trying to become wealthy in the currencies listed above.

Organic Search from search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN.
(Takes a few months to start being effective)
PPC - paid advertising via Google Ad Words and similar services.
(Costs money but can be effective)
Social Media Networks - providing free methods of attracting a loyal following.
(Totally free and starts working immediately)

I'll illustrate their worth with a scenario.

You write new blog post about Britney Spears for your new Celebrity Gossip Blog.
Submit the post to Digg, Mixx, Reddit.
Submit it to StumbleUpon and write a review for it.
Send out a Tweet on Twitter announcing the new post for your growing network to go and read (and pass around if they like it).
The Result: 50-1000+ new visitors to your site per day.

This is dependent on the power of the title you chose to use, the timeliness of the story and how big your network has grown (we'll discuss this in a blog post soon).

Note: The higher numbers can only be expected when your story make the front pages of services like Digg from being very newsworthy or virally popular.

Many accounts can become unwieldy, so we've created a little table below that you can print out or draw your own version of in your little black book of nerd stuff.

Your task here is to register at everyone of them and write down your account information in one central place. Please make sure you do record this information as it will make your life much easier in the future when we come to use them.

	Sign up for Twitter			Tweets are 140 character (or less) updates on what's going on in your mind or business. You build a band of followers and can get your message out to a large group of people - easy to do from your phone too.
	Register at Digg. Check for a Digg email and click on the link to confirm your registration.			The biggest news/info related site. Submitting a link to your content can get you large amounts of free traffic.
	Register at Reddit. The Register link is on the right-hand-side.			Another great news/update/content spreading tool, fastest and easiest to use by far.
	Register at Mixx Check your email again to click to confirm registration.			Mixx is a little different, it's still the same as Digg and Reddit, but it has a few more things to do to submit a page - adding extra information to help classify your story.
	Register at Stumble Upon			Stumble has one of the best models in the online world. Click a button get a random website. Once you get your own site Stumbled and reviewed you can get sustained traffic.
	Register at Yahoo for Yahoo Buzz			Another post submission tool that can reach a lot of people. Once you have a Yahoo login - you can go right here: http://buzz.yahoo.com/submit/
